ABSTRACT

The Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB) introduced a sit-at-home order in August 2021 as a means of putting pressure on the Nigerian government to release its leader, Mr. Nnamdi Kanu, who is standing trial for alleged treasonable felony and terrorism. Since then, Mondays have become public holidays in the south-eastern states of Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Imo and Enugu. Apart from Mondays, IPOB also declared any day Mr. Kanu appears in court a sit-at-home day. It could also declare any day a sit-at-home day anytime it deems fit. Undoubtedly, the sit-at-home order by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) on the back of Nnamdi Kanu’s extradition from Kenya has cost the residents of the South East a lot in terms of lives and properties. Since it started, several innocent citizens have lost their lives in the most gruesome manner, depriving families of their loved ones, who are sometimes breadwinners, and truncating the destinies of the dependants left behind while leaving scars that may never heal. The continued observance and obedience to the sit-at-home order has adversely affected the socio-economic lives of the people of South-East. Hence this paper examines the effect of the IPOB sit at home and it’s implication on the economy of the Southeast geo-political zone of Nigeria. However, as its objective, the paper examined the nature of the IPOB sit at home, the extent at which the IPOB sit at home is affecting the economy of the southeast geo-political zone of Nigeria. The study is based on secondary sources of data which comprises of internet materials, magazines, newspaper publications, and journal articles. The paper relied on content analysis and Frustration-Aggression theory as its framework of analysis, the paper identified that IPOB as a group is currently shooting the southeast zone and other areas within its loyalty on the leg, which may sooner or later crumble the economy of these areas. The paper recommends among others that dialogue is a tangible tool that will go a long way in melting the heart and mind of the government, which will yield a fruitful result than the self imposed sit-at home. Federal government should also ensure equitable distribution of resources among the six geopolitical zones of Nigeria via proper federal character system. This will help to reduce what the IPOB perceived as marginalization.
